Chicagoland Healthcare Apprenticeships: An Overview & Spotlight on Medical Assisting
VIEW Apprenticeship Event SLIDES
As the healthcare sector continues to face talent shortages, the apprenticeship model has been expanding as an alternative to traditional training. In 2024, there were over 37,000 registered apprentices in the healthcare industry across the country, a significant increase over the last 5 years (apprenticeship.gov).
Chicagoland hospitals and training providers have been experimenting with the model, and are eager to improve and expand. Join us for an engaging two-hour, in-person event to examine the state of healthcare apprenticeships in our region, learn from two different approaches, gain access to local resources, and network with like-minded partners.
First, we’ll tackle the basics: What is an apprenticeship? What’s the difference between a Department of Labor Registered apprenticeship and a Non-Registered apprenticeship? What healthcare apprenticeship models are currently operating in our region? Tonya Cody-Robinson, our Cook County Apprenticeship Specialist, will share local resources designed to help employers and training providers launch new programs.
Then, we’ll take a closer look at two local Medical Assistant apprenticeships to see the model in action and learn best practices:
- Amanda Spagnolo will present Endeavor’s 16-week, in-house, non-registered MA apprenticeship. A full-time staff coordinator (master’s level nurse) supplements the NHA curriculum for 14-person cohorts of both incumbent workers and new hires. Now in its 3rd year, the model has shown strong retention outcomes.
- Danielle Kuglin Seago will present College of DuPage’s DOL-Registered MA apprenticeship program, currently partnering on their second cohort with Northwestern Medicine. Participants are selected from existing MA students at College of DuPage who are hired by NM and work while completing their accredited coursework. NM also serves as their clinical site, offering a seamless blend of academic and hands-on training.
Light snacks will be provided. Please register here to attend.
